The most iconic figures in sports are on a single named basis in the public eye. Names like Jordan, Ali, and Gretzky are considered by many to be the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time; at least to present day) in each of their fields of expertise and competition. All are polarizing individuals who have an aura of themselves that places them on legendary status. Within jiu-jitsu there are many big name competitors that stand out, but then there's Rickson (Gracie). Rickson hasn't competed in years, yet he's looked upon by many as being jiu-jitsu's G.O.A.T. It's said that he's undefeated in any type of jiu-jitsu, freestyle wrestling, sambo, vale tudo, MMA, challenge or submission matches, as well as street fights, boasting well over 400 plus wins. While this may be doubted by some naysayers Ricardo Arona, Demian Maia, Paulo Filho, Draculino, the Machados, and countless others have attested to him being on another level that they've never encountered. Upon meeting Rickson for the first time there is definitely an energy about him that you can feel. This along with his extremely personal teaching style and the way he conveys his "invisible jiu-jitsu" quickly make you understand why he is looked upon in the manner that he is.
Though he's not been in the scene for some time now, Rickson slowly began creeping back into the spotlight by cornering his son, Kron Gracie, at a variety of events and now with his backing of the JJGF (Jiu-Jitsu Global Federation). Struggling with what he's been witnessing in competitions over the past few years, Rickson believes effectiveness of the art (which started as a self-defense system) has been lost and is looking to restore it with a major campaign to the jiu-jitsu community through the JJGF (http://www.jjgf.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).
In this video Rickson speaks about the JJGF, his thoughts on traditional vs modern jiu-jitsu, his lifestyle, returning to teaching and more.
