(27-10) has often been one of WSOF’s biggest critics. But with a new three-fight deal in place, he wants to make sure the world knows he’s excited about his fighting home.
“I’ve put those issues behind me, and I know I’m on board,” Burkman told MMAjunkie. “If I wasn’t happy with World Series of Fighting and the direction they’re going, I wouldn’t have signed this new three-fight deal. I know we’re going to do great things with World Series of fighting. I want the belt, and I’ll put all the previous issues behind me.”
Earlier this year, Burkman was singing a different tune. Despite competing on five of the upstart promotion’s first nine events, Burkman was hoping to stay even busier, and he took to Twitter to protest World Series of Fighting’s handling of his contract.
In retrospect, Burkman – who serves as his own manager – realizes it probably wasn’t the best way to try and resolve his differences with the promotion.
“I manage myself, so the problem is I don’t have anyone else that stands up for me or tells my side of the story,” Burkman said. “I have to do it. I think that’s why a lot of professional athletes have managers. They don’t pop off and cause confrontation with the organization or with the league they’re with.
“Fighters are very emotional and very fierce. That’s why do what I do. In any sport, there’s always confrontations when you’re negotiating. But from my side, I probably need to make sure that those things stay in the office and not put them on social media.”
Despite the brief tension, Burkman said there was a bright side to his public complaints. Burkman said WSOF exec Shawn Lampman was quick to reach out to him in hopes of a resolution, and the two were able to reach a common ground.
“When all of those comments came out, it made me and Shawn have a few conversations,” Burkman said. “I felt I needed to be paid some money that I was owed, and me and Shawn talked about it, and he made it right. That’s one thing that’s not being said in these articles: Shawn always answers my phone calls when I have a problem.
“I came in with the very first fight for this organization, and it’s growing fast. NBC has happened, and there’s all these things are going on and issues that need to be figured out, which is to be expected. Because me and Shawn are friends, I can call him and we can get into a little bit and we can get it figured out and move forward. Once we figure it out, it’s over, and I appreciate Shawn for that relationship.”
Of course, Burkman isn’t the only fighter who has voiced concerns with WSOF management. Jacob Volkmann has also been an outspoken critic of the organization, claiming the promotion tried to pay him less than his contracted purse or force him to sit on the sidelines.
Lampman believes that’s a poor characterization of what went on during his time with the organization.
“Jacob was given four fights in 11 months and asked for a fight outside the organization, and he lost,” Lampman explained. “In the world we live in, when a fighter loses in any combat sport, he has to deal with the effects of that, and the effects of that are that his value as a fighter has to be adjusted. But with Jacob, I accommodated him on every single thing that we ever discussed. I moved things around to accommodate him. Did we have a budget? Absolutely. And I explained the business side to Jacob, and he made a decision and signed his name to an agreement that he agreed to.
“It’s really frustrating because not only have we done nothing wrong, but we were accommodating our fighters. And it’s not just Josh. It’s not just Jacob. There have been other fighters who we’ve paid some extra money to in order to help out, and we’ve been nothing but a good organization for fighters.”
Lampman does concede some fighters have been left inactive longer than he’d like, but he points to the fluid nature of the promotions’ television plans during its first two years of operations as a contributing factor and believes the company is now dialed in on what’s to come.
“We’re really working hard to get fighters fights,” Lampman said. “Now, unfortunately in the world of media, you have to deal with TV schedules, and the TV schedules from NBC Sports at times have changed and we had to move things. So there are times when you simply don’t have the window to give a fighter a fight, and at that point if a fighter is under contract, he has a choice to either stay with the organization or he has the option to leave and go wherever he wants. We had fighters that were under contract that had the right to leave and they chose to leave, and we had fighters under contract who chose to stay, so that’s gone both directions. This is the function of the business we’re in.
“We’re a new company. We’re putting in 23-hour days, seven days a week and working very hard, and we’re doing some amazing things in the sport that never been done. We’re going to continue to do that, but I think what happened and the way it was presented in the press was very unfair, and it’s not true the way that it’s being skewed. And I think from the point of view of somebody as dedicated as we all are, I just want the truth to be out there.”
Burkman’s next fight has yet to be officially announced. He was expected to face Jon Fitch earlier this year, but injury forced Burkman to withdraw. But when he does step back in WSOF’s decagon, Burkman said it will be with the intention of winning the WSOF welterweight title.
Once he’s completed his new three-fight deal, Burkman said he’ll evaluate his position. And while he once expressed a burning desire to return to the UFC for the first time since 2008, Burkman said that’s not necessarily a certainty anymore.
“When I signed my deal, there were certain things in my contract that I didn’t like,” Burkman said. “So I asked Shawn and I asked Ali (Abdelaziz) to add certain stipulations in my contract and they let me do that to protect myself. I think that’s what fighters and managers need to do: They need to step up and work on contracts that are good for both sides. With Shawn, I told him, ‘Listen, at the end of these three fights, I want to be able to make some real money because I’m going to win these three fights and I’m going to be a champion. I need to make some real money.’ Sean said, ‘If by that point we’re not at a place where I can give you an opportunity to make some real money and you let me know you want to go to another organization, I will let you go.’
“With those things being communicated being talked about, I absolutely hope that Shawn and World Series of Fighting can provide me an opportunity to make some real money, and I’ll happily stick around. I think some big things are on the horizon. I’m 34 years old, and I don’t know how long I have left. But I feel that this is the best time of my life, and I need to capitalize on it as best as I can.”
So Burkman and WSOF start a new chapter in their relationship, one that both fighter and the organization insist will be fruitful for them both. Burkman said he’s content with the result of the discussions, even if he’s not exactly happy with the way they began. And he also believes there are lessons to be learned from how he handled the entire ordeal.
“World Series of fighting, just like the UFC and other organizations, is out there to build a brand,” Burkman said. “For fighters specifically, we’re out to take care of ourselves and we want to fight, and those two things don’t always necessarily work together. I can’t always get a fight every three months because the organization is building a brand. I want to fight often, and I want to be active. I think that’s where the butting heads starts.
“I think it’s up to fighters to protect themselves. It’s up to fighters’ managers to protect themselves. If you have real concerns, you bring them up to your matchmaker, your president, and you get those things in a contract so that it doesn’t become an issue down the road. The problem between promoters and fighters and negotiating is never going to go anywhere. My biggest thing is I just want for people to know that World Series of Fighting is good for the sport. It’s a good place for fighters, and it’s a good opportunity to prove yourself.”
