Brock Lesnar has been plying his trade in pro-wrestling for the past couple of years, but his tenure with the WWE could be ending soon. It's been stated that the former Division I wrestling champ is finally healthy after battling diverticulitis throughout his UFC stint, but is a return to mixed martial arts in his future?
Fox Sports talks about his current contract situation:
Lesnar is currently locked up through part of 2015 in a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment, but the contract only runs through the end of March, shortly after the promotion's annual WrestleMania event.
At that point, according to several sources, Lesnar will become a free agent once again and he can decide whether he wants to return to wrestling for another few years or make one more run at mixed martial arts.
Dana White has also teased a potential return:
"Brock Lesnar's under contract with the WWE. We have a great relationship with him. He's healthy and he has said that he's interested in fighting again. We'll see what happens."
The mammoth heavyweight in Lesnar is a talented wrestler and a freak athlete. While he was battling an illness for years which made him perform in less than optimal condition, he was still able to parlay that into a very successful -- albeit short -- UFC career that saw him win and defend the heavyweight title twice. From 2008-2011, Lesnar became the sport's biggest draw as he captivated audiences and raised the PPV threshold for the UFC during that period.
If he does make a UFC return next year though, Lesnar will be turning 38-years-old, and will have been out of MMA competition for over 3 years. With his age, health, and time away from training, we won't know how he would perform in today's landscape.
That said, any possible return would surely make for huge numbers for the UFC, so throwing money his way once he becomes a free agent is certainly a no-brainer for them. After all, the WWE may be having some financial issues that could make any bidding war even easier for the UFC.
